Funder: Society of Actuaries
Due Dates: November 13, 2026 (Proposal submission)
Funding Amounts: Historical budgeting guide: $25,000–$50,000 for all contracted projects (33rd–66th percentiles)
Summary: Supports a research report on explainable AI techniques and practical adoption in regulated actuarial work, especially regulatory reporting.
Key Information: Proposals must use researchers’ own words, not AI-written text, and fully disclose any AI use.
The Society of Actuaries Research Institute’s Actuarial Innovation & Technology Program Steering Committee seeks researchers to examine the current state and future potential of explainable AI (XAI) in regulated actuarial work. The project emphasizes regulatory reporting and the challenge of explaining AI-assisted decisions to regulators, auditors, validators, and reviewers.
The report should assess relevant XAI techniques, including their value, limitations, and suitability for different audiences or purposes. It should evaluate existing applications in insurance and similarly regulated fields, such as banking credit decisions and healthcare. Researchers should also address barriers to XAI and practical ways for actuaries to adopt AI. The broader aim is to make AI methods usable where actuarial decisions require substantial explanation and documentation.
