Summary: Supports research developing an evidence-based framework to help actuaries choose fit-for-purpose AI models, platforms, architectures, and sourcing approaches.
Key Information: Proposals must be written in researchers’ own words, with any AI use in proposal preparation fully disclosed.
The Society of Actuaries Research Institute seeks research that helps practicing actuaries choose appropriate AI approaches, rather than simply catalogue technologies. The project should compare general-purpose AI, actuarial vendor platforms, open-source tools, low-code environments, internally developed solutions, and hybrid approaches. It should address model and platform selection, deployment architecture, data integration, workflow design, and build-versus-buy decisions.
The framework should weigh accuracy, explainability, regulatory defensibility, privacy, cost, implementation effort, integration, and human oversight in different organizational contexts. It should distinguish lower-risk productivity tasks from higher-impact actuarial processes requiring stronger controls. Relevant applications span life, health, retirement, and property and casualty work, including valuation, pricing, underwriting, reserving, experience studies, reporting, and governance. Practitioner interviews, surveys, case studies, and targeted literature or market scans are encouraged.
