Key Information: Applicants must be SOT graduate student members (pending membership accepted) and PhD candidates by the 2027 SOT Annual Meeting.
The Carl C. Smith Graduate Student Award is offered by the Society of Toxicology’s Mechanisms Specialty Section to recognize graduate research presented at the SOT Annual Meeting. Among the section’s original awards, it honors Carl C. Smith’s career and the commitment of Dr. Smith and his wife Tee to advancing graduate education in toxicology. The award is supported by the Carl C. Smith Student Mechanisms Award Fund of the SOT Endowment.
The program emphasizes scientific impact, depth of mechanistic insight and approach, and relevance to toxicology. Reviewers also assess clarity of findings and scientific writing, considering the research within the student’s overall thesis, training, and career goals. Top-tier finalists undergo a second review phase involving a full-length manuscript.
