The OTA Award for Excellence in Mentoring, offered through the Society of Toxicology, honors individuals who have made a major difference to LGBT+ scientists pursuing or developing careers in toxicology. It reflects OTA’s objective of celebrating mentorship of early career LGBTQIA2S+ scientists as well as SOT members. The award recognizes mentors in academia, government, industry, and related fields whose leadership and service create career development opportunities and help toxicologists achieve professional goals.
The recognition emphasizes active, intentional, thoughtful, and impactful mentoring. It considers the influence of a mentor’s philosophy within their current or past work community, mentees’ scientific contributions to toxicology, and the positive effects of mentorship on their careers. Mentoring may include championing scientists considering or entering toxicology and supporting those with established careers.
