South Arts’ Arts Journalism Grants are a pilot program addressing declining arts coverage budgets at legacy media outlets and limited resources at emerging media. The program supports the creation, distribution, and sustainability of independent arts journalism that documents artistic activity, fosters public dialogue, and encourages participation in the arts.
Support covers criticism, analysis, features, interviews, investigations, audio and multimedia journalism, and travel-based reporting connected to Southern artists and arts organizations. Individual grants strengthen journalistic practice, organizational grants build editorial capacity, and travel grants support specific reporting opportunities. Priorities include underserved, rural, and historically underrepresented communities; diverse artistic disciplines and cultural traditions; innovative storytelling and distribution; and collaboration, mentorship, and long-term sustainability.
