Description
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) administers State Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) funding to improve the health and social well-being of youth ages 10–19. The program supports evidence-based or evidence-informed education intended to delay sexual activity, increase condom or contraceptive use among sexually active youth, or reduce pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. It focuses on youth at heightened risk or facing special circumstances, including youth in foster care, experiencing homelessness, living with HIV/AIDS, affected by human trafficking, or living in areas with high teen birth rates.
Supported approaches include classroom instruction, youth development and community service learning, and peer leadership. Awardees also work with community partners to establish referral networks and condom access points, hold parent-child communication events, and plan to sustain their education programs beyond the grant period.
