Description
The Southeast Asian Flagship Language Initiative–Indonesian (SEAFLI-Indonesian) provides Boren fellows and scholars with a unique, immersive opportunity to achieve professional proficiency in the Indonesian language. The program includes a full-time domestic summer language program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, followed by a fall semester of intensive language and cultural study at the State University of Malang in Indonesia. Participants at any level of Indonesian language proficiency—from beginner to advanced—are welcome. The initiative encourages extended overseas study, which can include additional coursework, internships, or research in the spring semester.
SEAFLI-Indonesian is administered by the American Councils for International Education and is part of the Boren Awards, which are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP). The program emphasizes cultural immersion, including homestays, excursions, and language partners, and is designed to prepare participants for careers in fields critical to U.S. national security.
