The Special-Year Program Membership at the Institute for Advanced Study's School of Mathematics offers approximately 20 positions annually to mathematicians and theoretical computer scientists interested in actively participating in the School’s Special-Year Program. Members are expected to engage deeply with the program’s activities and are afforded the freedom to focus full-time on research. Each academic year, the Special-Year theme changes, typically within mathematics and theoretical computer science. For the 2026–27 cycle, the theme is "Conformally Symplectic Dynamics and Geometry."
Members receive access to on-campus housing and IAS research resources for visits ranging from 2 to 11 months, with most memberships lasting an academic year or a single term. Positions may be stipendiary (financially supported) or non-stipendiary, depending on the applicant's circumstances.
