Summary: Supports grassroots sport activities that improve well-being and community integration for children and youth displaced by war-related humanitarian crises.
Key Information: The coordinator must be active in sport, and grassroots clubs must cooperate with social, psychological or pedagogical support centres.
This European Commission preparatory action funds sport-based support for children and young people affected by humanitarian crises and mass migration in the context of war. Managed by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), it aims to improve physical and mental well-being, help participants overcome trauma, and build connections with hosting communities. Further objectives include integration into education and the labour market.
The emphasis is on local, grassroots activities, mainly through sports clubs and involving one country. Games and sports must serve specific social and psychosocial goals, be age- and culturally appropriate, and consider community gender roles. Experienced coaches should build on participants’ existing abilities. Projects should collect and promote experiences and good practices to inspire similar support programmes elsewhere in Europe.
