The Seismological Society of America (SSA) Government Relations Policy Fellowship gives student and early-career members experience with policymaking and advocacy for earthquake science in Washington, DC. Established by SSA’s Board of Directors in February 2022, it combines financial support for the two-day Geosciences Congressional Visits Day (Geo-CVD) with service on the Board’s Government Relations Committee.
Fellows help identify legislative goals and issues that guide SSA’s government relations work. Geo-CVD includes a workshop on communication, congressional processes, relevant legislation, and federal agencies and programs, followed by escorted meetings with members of Congress and staff on Capitol Hill. The fellowship connects this congressional visit experience with ongoing committee participation and attendance at SSA’s Annual Meeting.
