The Stanford Humanities Center supports a full academic year of residential research in traditional and emergent humanities disciplines and the interpretive social sciences. External faculty fellowships serve scholars affiliated with academic institutions and independent scholars, bringing together a community with diverse institutional backgrounds, roles, experiences, and perspectives. The program welcomes approaches ranging from conventional scholarship to research that critically examines disciplines themselves, including digital humanities work through its partnership with the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis.
Projects that foster intellectual exchange among scholars are especially appropriate. Fellows pursue their research while participating in regular lunches, weekly research presentations, and the wider Stanford intellectual community, usually through a Humanities Center Research Workshop. Selection emphasizes promising research, interest across humanities fields, and scholars’ contributions to collegial discussion.
