Description
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) administers five state assistance programs for waste reduction, recycling, household hazardous waste (HHW), and municipal landfill projects. The programs support recycling facilities and equipment, recycling coordinator salaries, public education, and HHW collection and disposal. Recycling projects aim to reduce the volume or toxicity of materials entering the municipal solid waste stream and strengthen municipal recycling infrastructure.
Separate categories support municipal landfill closure and landfill gas management. Gas management projects promote improved air quality, capture greenhouse gases, and encourage energy recovery from landfill gas. DEC’s Division of Materials Management, Bureau of Solid Waste Management, provides program assistance.
