The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), within the U.S. Department of Transportation, funds state processes for notifying motor vehicle owners and lessees of open recalls when they register their vehicles. Competitive grants support methods for identifying open recalls, integrating recall information into registration processes, delivering notifications, and evaluating whether notified vehicles receive repairs.
Recipients must operate the notification program continuously for two years and evaluate its results. Projects must include ongoing analysis of recall completion data and science-based performance measures. NHTSA is particularly interested in identifying vehicles repaired following state notification and resourceful approaches that motivate owners to remedy recalls. Assessing owners’ attitudes toward notification protocols is encouraged but not required. NHTSA may share recipients’ processes and methodologies with other stakeholders for future implementation.
