Description
The Iowa Department of Transportation administers separate State Recreational Trails (SRT) and Federal Recreational Trails (FRT) programs. SRT supports the acquisition, construction, or improvement of Iowa recreational trails for public use, enjoyment, and participation. Trails must already be open to the public or be dedicated to public use upon completion.
FRT supports recreational trails for motorized and non-motorized users. Eligible work includes trail maintenance and restoration, new construction, trailhead and trailside facilities, trail linkages, equipment purchases or leases, and acquisition of trail property or easements. It also supports trail safety and environmental protection education. Competitive federal projects accommodate multiple user groups, reach underserved populations, connect trails, and leverage other funding.
