Description
The Recreational Trails Program is administered by the North Carolina Department of Natural & Cultural Resources through its Parks and Recreation division. It supports projects addressing trail and trail-related recreational needs identified in the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan. The program’s priorities are tied to those needs, with funding available for trails themselves and associated recreational facilities.
Supported work includes trail planning, construction, and maintenance, as well as signs and related facilities. This scope provides support for both developing trails and maintaining them, alongside facilities that serve trail-related recreation. Congress funds the program using revenue from federal gas taxes paid on fuel used by off-highway vehicles.
