Description
The State Victims Assistance Program (SVAP) is administered by the Department of Crime Victim Assistance Grants (DCVAG) within the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office. Funded in part through wages earned by inmates in the state’s Work Release Program, it supports victim-assistance programs established under the federal Victims of Crime Act. Its purpose is to strengthen South Carolina’s capacity to assist crime victims and promote justice and healing.
SVAP considers projects serving victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and previously underserved crimes, as well as training programs. Supported work can include advocacy, counseling, residential shelter, forensic interviews and nurse examinations, emergency assistance, and services that help victims obtain safety and stability.
