--- ## Description The Steel Intern Scholarships, administered by the Association for Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) Foundation, are designed to foster student interest in the iron and steel industry by offering hands-on, paid summer internships at North American steel-producing or steel-related companies, followed by a one-year scholarship. Up to 50 scholarships are awarded annually, each valued at $7,500, with one exceptional applicant receiving the Premier Scholarship valued at $12,000. The program aims to encourage students in engineering, computer science, data science, environmental/sustainability science, or industrial safety to pursue careers in the steel industry, combining practical experience with academic support. --- ## Due Dates - October 5, 2026: Full application submission deadline for 2027-2028 Steel Intern Scholarships (all required documents must be submitted by this date) --- ## Funding Amount - Up to 50 scholarships awarded annually, each valued at $7,500. - One Premier Scholarship awarded to the top applicant, valued at $12,000. - All scholarships require completion of a paid summer internship at a North American steel-producing or steel-related company. - Recipients from Non-High Income Countries (NHIC) may receive reduced awards (60% of full amount, $4,500), with NHIC recipients capped at 15% of total awards. --- ## Eligibility Applicants must meet all of the following criteria: - Be a citizen of the United States, Canada, or Mexico. - Be enrolled full-time at an accredited North American university in a four-year undergraduate or entering the first year of a two-year graduate program. - Eligible students are: - In year 2 or 3 of a 4-year undergraduate program - In year 2–4 of a 5-year undergraduate program - Seniors entering the first year of graduate school (must have at least one semester remaining after the internship) - Major in engineering, engineering technology, computer science, data science, environmental/sustainability science, or industrial safety. - Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. - Be able and willing to temporarily relocate for the required internship if necessary. - Demonstrate a strong interest in the iron and steel industry. - High school seniors and university freshmen are not eligible. - Applicants working full-time are not eligible. --- ## Application Process Applicants must submit the following materials (PDF, unprotected format) by the deadline: - Completed application form - Resume (including academic information, work, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, and AIST/Material Advantage membership if applicable) - Essay (max two pages): Describe professional goals, interest in a steel industry career, and how your skills could enhance the industry - Academic transcript (official or unofficial, showing applicant and university names) - At least one recommendation letter (up to five accepted), ideally from both a representative of a steel-related company and a discipline-related professor; letters must be submitted directly by the author to lwharrey@aist.org Additional requirements: - All documents must be in English. - All application materials must be submitted electronically by October 5, 2026. - Scholarship recipients are announced in December. - Recipients must complete the paid summer internship, receive a satisfactory performance review, and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA to receive the scholarship funds. --- ## Additional Information - The AIST Foundation assists with internship placement, but students may also secure their own steel-related internships with prior approval. - Acceptance of an internship at a non-steel-related company, or rescinding an accepted offer from within the program, will disqualify the applicant. - Scholarships and grants are subject to availability, funding, and approval by the AIST Foundation Board of Trustees.
