The Edward J. Stemmler M.D. Medical Education Research Grant Program, administered by NBME, supports research and development of pioneering approaches to assessing medical knowledge and skills. It funds work with the potential to advance assessment theory, knowledge, or practice across undergraduate medical education, graduate education and training, and professional practice. Both pilot studies and more comprehensive projects are of interest.
The program supports experienced medical education researchers and encourages collaboration within and among institutions when it strengthens a project's contribution and likelihood of success. Each team includes an early-career investigator who makes substantive contributions while receiving mentorship. Projects should enhance the professional development of people preparing to practice or continuing to practice medicine, rather than develop commercialized assessment products or services.
