The Society for Marine Mammalogy’s Stu Innes Memorial Travel Bursary supports student travel to its Biennial Marine Mammal Conference. It honours Stuart Innes’s commitment to helping young researchers develop careers in Arctic marine mammal science. Friends and colleagues established the bursary in recognition of his belief that the conference offers valuable opportunities to learn, network, and gain enthusiasm through contact with leaders in the field.
The bursary focuses on conference participation and professional development rather than direct funding for fieldwork. It commemorates Innes following his death, alongside fellow scientist Malcolm Ramsay, in a helicopter crash during field research near Resolute Bay, Nunavut, Canada, on May 21, 2000.
