Funder: Society for Marine Mammalogy
Due Dates (Anticipated): January 2027 (Abstract submission and travel grant application)
Funding Amounts: Registration and travel support; historical 2019 awards ranged from $60–$700 USD
Summary: Supports student presenters at the Society’s biennial conference with registration fees and travel expenses.
Key Information: Applicants must be SMM student members when submitting their abstracts; awards require accepted presentations and verified student status.
The Society for Marine Mammalogy’s Student Travel Grants help students participate in its biennial conference by offsetting registration and travel expenses rather than funding a separate research project. The SMM2026 program supports student presenters traveling to San Juan, Puerto Rico, with eligible costs including airfare, housing, food, and conference registration. Students attending without presenting are not eligible.
The SMM Student Affairs Committee awards the grants, taking account of available funding, application volume, and student needs. Support is intended to broaden student participation, but the program cannot fund every applicant or necessarily cover all expenses. The Society encourages students to seek multiple funding sources and asks those who do not need support, or will be funded by their own institutions, not to apply.
