Summer Intern Scholarship supports medical students in eight-week cardiothoracic surgery placements, funding living expenses during laboratory and clinical training to introduce them to the specialty.

Description
Established in 2007, the AATS Foundation’s Summer Intern Scholarship introduces first- and second-year medical students to cardiothoracic surgery through an eight-week summer placement in an AATS member’s cardiothoracic surgery department. Students undertake their proposed work at the host sponsor’s institution, with exposure to both laboratory and clinical experience. The scholarship supports living expenses during this training period.
Alongside the Foundation’s direct internship support, the program includes two Scanlan Family Summer Intern Scholarships. The review committee selects these recipients on the merit of their applications, and recipients receive special recognition on the Scanlan Family Scholars website. Mentors are expected to provide the AATS Foundation Board of Directors with updates on recipients’ subsequent career paths.
