Description
The Summer/Semester Undergraduate Research Experience Program (SURE), administered by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s STaR Division, helps West Virginia colleges and universities provide substantive undergraduate research experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Institutional grants support student stipends for substantial participation in ongoing research at students’ home institutions, other higher education institutions, or private and federal research organizations.
SURE seeks to prepare future STEM researchers and faculty by expanding access to research, faculty mentoring, opportunities to present results, and campus networks of student researchers. Institutional plans should encourage graduate study in West Virginia and participation in nationally competitive STEM scholarships and fellowships. Connections to thematic research areas at state research universities and existing research-infrastructure growth strategies are encouraged.
