Description
The Japan Foundation provides partial financial support to overseas publishing companies for translating and publishing works originally written in Japanese. Administered by the Planning and Coordination / Literary Arts Section of the Arts and Culture Department, the program aims to foster better understanding of Japan and Japanese culture by encouraging Japanese works to reach readers overseas.
Eligible projects cover fiction and nonfiction in the humanities and social sciences, including e-book publication. Publishers may seek translation support, publication support, or both, with the possibility of applying for the two components in different fiscal years. Selection priorities include works likely to reach a broad readership, authors not previously published in the applicant’s country, and direct translations in languages or areas where Japanese works are rarely published.
