    Description

The Supreme Court Historical Society has awarded this competitive research grant annually since 2023 to support research on the history of the United States Supreme Court. Named for Henry J. Abraham, the award honors a scholar whose works on constitutional law and the judicial process have had an enduring influence on Supreme Court history.

The program supports people pursuing academic careers in legal history, including graduate students, law students, and recent Ph.D. or J.D. graduates. Its central priority is the development of publishable scholarship in Supreme Court history. Past funded projects have examined the Test Oath Cases and Confederate disqualification, the development of the Religion Clauses, and bans on barmaids in the context of Goesart v. Cleary (1948).
