Description
The Iowa Department of Education’s competitive Therapeutic Classroom Grant supports public school districts establishing new therapeutic classrooms or adding critical components to existing classrooms and programs being developed into therapeutic classrooms. It serves learners ages 3–21 whose emotional, social, or behavioral needs interfere with success in their current educational environment.
A therapeutic classroom is a set of educational services, not necessarily a separate physical classroom. Programs provide intensified, individualized support so students can return successfully to their educational environment, including general education, with or without continued supports. The grant is not intended for universal social-emotional instruction or support for every student with a behavior intervention plan. Therapeutic programming forms part of a district’s tiers of social-emotional-behavioral health (SEBH) supports.
