Description
The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) has administered the Threatened Sites program since 1985 to recover archaeological evidence that might otherwise be lost. It supports urgent work at Virginia sites endangered by erosion, impending development, or vandalism. When a site cannot be saved, the work focuses on documenting and recovering the information it holds.
Funding can support site assessment, excavation, laboratory processing and analysis, and reporting. Recent projects have also included collections rehabilitation and research on previously recovered materials. DHR involves volunteers and the public when possible.
