TIRF’s Doctoral Dissertation Grants support students completing research connected to the foundation’s priorities in English language education. Established in 2002, the program contributes to some costs of completing doctoral research rather than financing an entire project or personal expenses. TIRF seeks research that strengthens connections between theory, practice, and policy, particularly studies with clear implications for policymakers and others making decisions about English language education.
The program supports a broad range of topics, including artificial intelligence, language assessment, teacher education, digital technology, language policy, multilingualism, and teaching English to migrants, refugees, and young learners. Research on languages other than English may qualify when its implications for English language education are explicit. Cambridge English and Duolingo support the competition, and proposals are reviewed by established international researchers.
