Description
The Tobacco Cessation & Prevention Project is administered by the New Mexico Indian Affairs Department (IAD) using state funding from the Tobacco Settlement Fund. It supports initiatives that directly benefit Nations, Pueblos, Tribes, and Native Americans throughout New Mexico by preventing and reducing commercial tobacco abuse, including e-cigarettes, vapes, and smokeless tobacco.
The program emphasizes culturally appropriate approaches that recognize traditional and ceremonial tobacco use while strengthening Native American cultural identity and resistance to commercial tobacco. Funding can establish emerging programs or expand the capacity of existing programs. Projects should address the needs of the tribal populations served, reduce commercial tobacco use, and/or increase awareness of vaping’s harmful effects.
