Description
The Ohio Arts Council’s Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program supports accomplished mentor artists working with dedicated apprentices to sustain folk and traditional art forms. Through a yearlong learning relationship, apprentices develop technique and artistry by observing, imitating, practicing, and receiving guidance. The work also emphasizes the tradition’s cultural history and significance.
The program welcomes traditional music and instrument making, sacred and secular crafts, occupational traditions, folk and ethnic dance, and arts associated with annual celebrations. Apprenticeships must take place within a culture or community of practitioners rather than an academic setting. Mentors and apprentices share their work through a community presentation in Ohio.
