Description
Transportation Alternatives (TA), administered by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), supports local and regional agencies undertaking smaller-scale transportation projects and activities. Funding comes through a set-aside from the federal Surface Transportation Block Grant program, continuing federal support for transportation alternatives and enhancement activities provided since 1991.
The program covers pedestrian and bicycle facilities, recreational trails, historic preservation, Safe Routes to School, and other transportation-related activities. Allocations are distributed across population-based areas, with a flexible component based on total area population. The distribution also supports the statewide Safe Routes to School program before flexible funds are allocated.
