Summary: Supports full-stack trapped-ion quantum computers with more than 1,000 physical qubits, integrated with HPC and accessible through the cloud.
Key Information: Participation is restricted to legal entities in EU Member States or EuroHPC JU Participating States, subject to ownership-control safeguards.
EuroHPC Joint Undertaking funds this Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action to scale European trapped-ion quantum computing for industrial and scientific use. The action targets a full-stack computer with more than 1,000 physical qubits, integrated with high-performance computing (HPC) and accessible through cloud platforms. Projects must address at least two major technical roadblocks identified in SRIA 2030, including scalability through modular architectures and inter-chain coupling, or photonic integration for laser delivery.
The program also supports error correction, fault-tolerant computing, standardised hardware-software interfaces, and interoperability across vendors and platforms. Projects should implement at least two practical use cases, benchmarking computational advantage or progress towards it. Open access, user documentation, training, and application co-design should engage researchers and industry, including SMEs, while strengthening independent European sourcing of critical components.
