The University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) provides fieldwork scholarships to help doctoral researchers gather original evidence through essential in-person research. Established in 2002, the programme addresses the resource gap that can prevent postgraduate researchers worldwide from undertaking fieldwork. It supports work such as archival research, interviews, participant observation and ethnography where physical presence is necessary to advance a doctoral project.
The scholarships support contemporary European Studies, defined as post-Second World War research, typically—but not exclusively—concerning European integration or related areas. UACES prioritises clearly defined outcomes, feasible and significant research, and fieldwork closely connected to a project's core research question. Supported topics include EU security and defence governance, rural transformation in Romania, queer of color organising, and EU–Brazil diplomatic cooperation.
