The Botstiber Compact Seminar in Austrian Studies is a visiting professorship supported by the Botstiber Institute for Austrian-American Studies (BIAAS) and administered through the Austrian Studies Program at UC Berkeley’s Institute of European Studies. Visiting professors teach an official, two-unit course through the Department of German, bringing Austrian Studies to students across UC Berkeley departments.
Seminar topics may address Austrian literature, history, politics, or culture in the broadest sense, with interdisciplinary approaches encouraged. The five-week appointment combines classroom teaching and student office hours with a public Botstiber Lecture at the Institute of European Studies. In keeping with BIAAS’s mission, the lecture addresses the historic relationship between the United States and Austria, including lands of the former Habsburg Empire.
