The Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP), administered through UCOP’s Research Grants Program Office, supports research across social, behavioral, and biomedical sciences. Its 2027 Core Call funds doctoral students and postdoctoral investigators conducting their own hypothesis-driven research in a mentored training environment. The awards combine research with individualized professional development to prepare independent researchers and support other tobacco-related career pathways.
TRDRP prioritizes research with near-term benefits for current and former commercial tobacco users and California’s tobacco control efforts. Research priorities include the California Endgame Initiative, prevention and treatment, tobacco control policy, tobacco-related diseases, environmental exposure and toxicology, nicotine addiction, and maternal and fetal impacts of smoking. Cancer research addressing the causes or remedies of tobacco-related health disparities receives priority over other tobacco-related cancer applications.
