Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), funds early technical validation of ambitious artificial intelligence and machine learning innovations. Frontier AI means systems delivering state-of-the-art benchmark performance or genuinely new-to-the-world capabilities through advances in model or system architecture, training methodology, core learning algorithms or core control algorithms.
Phase 1 is the first stage of a three-phase pipeline intended to develop UK AI Champions. Projects should reduce technical uncertainty, demonstrate that the core approach works in principle, and generate evidence for future development and commercialisation. The competition targets health and life sciences, advanced materials, national security and defence, and AI safety and assurance. Innovations must have credible barriers to entry and the potential to become scalable products, services or platforms.
