The National Institutes of Health (NIH), through the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), anticipates supporting a Diagnostic Research Innovation Center (DRIC) as part of the next phase of the Undiagnosed Diseases Network (UDN). The DRIC will play a central role in diagnosing UDN participants, including systematically re-evaluating unsolved cases from previous network phases. The center is expected to develop and test innovative diagnostic tools and strategies for both genomic and non-genomic conditions, working closely with clinical nodes, the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Program (UDP), the Clinical and Data Coordinating Center (CDCC), and other UDN stakeholders.
The DRIC will provide expertise and resources in advanced sequencing, multi-omics, gene function studies (in animal and human in vitro models), and non-genetic diagnostic strategies. The center is also expected to contribute to the discovery of novel disease-associated genes and variants, non-genetic contributors to UDN phenotypes, and the identification of new diseases and syndromes. An integrated center with demonstrated scientific synergy and prior collaboration is expected.
