Key Information: Universities may apply only on behalf of a state geological survey or other state office organized under their university system.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Landslide Hazards Program administers this funding opportunity under the Cooperative Landslide Hazard Mapping and Assessment Program, established by the National Landslide Preparedness Act. It assists state, local, Tribal, and territorial governments in understanding and managing landslide risks, protecting lives and property, and improving community preparedness.
Supported work includes detailed hazard maps and assessments, emergency planning and interagency coordination, outreach campaigns, workshops, educational materials, and tools that help decision-makers use landslide information. The program encourages partnerships among government agencies, universities, and local organizations. FY 2027 guidance also includes a focus on Alaska’s landslide hazards, including geospatial products and communication of scientific uncertainty. Priorities include rigorous scientific methods, transparent data management, state and local preparedness, and work addressing post-wildfire landslides, debris flows, and slope instability.
