Description
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Upland Game Program uses this grant program to fund projects that benefit upland game birds and the habitats they depend on. Its goal is to sustain bird populations while supporting continued hunting opportunities and other public uses. Funding comes from an account established for revenue from upland game bird hunting validations and stamps.
The program supports habitat improvement, land acquisition, research, and public hunting opportunities and outreach. Its broader objectives also include better population surveys, understanding of predation and disease, and improved detection of illegal hunting. The FY 2026–27 solicitation emphasized non-breeding habitat, special hunts, research using existing data, and working groups addressing upland bird conservation and management.
