Description
The California Natural Resources Agency’s Urban Greening Grant Program funds development projects that use nature-based solutions to mitigate urban heat islands, rising temperatures, and extreme heat. Supported by California’s voter-approved Climate Bond, the program aims to cool communities while delivering benefits such as carbon storage, stormwater management, habitat, public health protection, and expanded access to green space.
Projects may plant trees for strategic shade, expand green spaces that offer refuge during heat waves, green schoolyards, or create green streets and alleyways that capture and clean stormwater. The program prioritizes direct and meaningful benefits for vulnerable populations and disadvantaged communities, alongside projects that use conservation corps services or leverage other funding.
