The Microbiology Society’s Vacation Studentships are a competitive scheme supporting undergraduate research across the breadth of microbiology during the summer vacation. Projects should give students insight into research, exposure to equipment or techniques beyond their degree course, and experience aligned with their career aspirations. The scheme also enables supervisors, particularly early- and mid-career scientists, to develop supervision, grant-writing, project management, leadership, budgeting, evaluation and reporting skills.
Funding supports six- to eight-week projects with clearly described aims, appropriate experimental approaches and realistic plans for completion. Projects should offer scope for student innovation, interaction with other researchers and/or presentation of results. In 2027, New England Biolabs will fund two additional awards for students of Black or Mixed Black heritage to promote diversity and representation and foster future research leaders and role models.
