The Veterinary Cancer Society (VCS) created this resident research grant in 2016 in honor of veterinary oncology pioneer Dr. Gordon Theilen. The program supports hypothesis-driven, prospective studies in veterinary or comparative oncology, including both clinical and basic research. Projects are intended to take approximately one year to complete and to enhance existing scientific knowledge.
Proposals are reviewed by VCS members with expertise in clinical and basic veterinary oncology research. The program emphasizes scientifically relevant questions, appropriate study design, feasible objectives, and the potential for publishable results. Reviewers also consider the research setting, prior productivity, and animal protection and safety. Recipients share their completed work with the veterinary oncology community at a VCS Annual Conference.
