Description
The Village Safe Water Program (VSW) is administered by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Water. It works with rural Alaskan communities to develop sustainable sanitation facilities, addressing the lack of safe drinking water sources and safe means of sewage disposal. VSW is one of three Facility Programs within the Division of Water, with Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funding supporting rural sanitation infrastructure planning and construction.
The program serves a rural setting of more than 280 isolated villages, nearly all accessible only by air and water. These predominantly Native communities range from 25 to 6,000 residents, averaging about 300. Many residents rely heavily on local wildlife and fish for food, and many communities lack adequate drinking water and sewage disposal.
