Description
The Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) administers the Virginia Battlefield Preservation Fund to support permanent protection of battlefield land. It funds fee-simple acquisition of property or acquisition of a historic preservation and open-space easement. Eligible land lies within a Virginia Revolutionary War, War of 1812, or Civil War battlefield identified with a priority rating in the applicable National Park Service report.
The program aims to preserve battlefield landscapes and their historic setting. DHR also considers threats to a property, its proximity to protected land, and its potential to support education, recreation, research, and heritage tourism. Every funded property must be protected by a perpetual historic preservation and open-space easement.
