Description
The Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program’s Habitat Conservation Account supports land conservation across Washington, from natural areas near cities to habitats containing rare species and unique natural features. The Recreation and Conservation Funding Board administers the program with support from the Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO). Its goals include acquiring valuable habitat before it is lost to other uses and conserving lands for wildlife protection, public enjoyment, and outdoor education.
Five funding categories distinguish wildlife habitat acquisition and limited public-access development from riparian acquisition and restoration, and restoration of state lands. Restoration and enhancement are eligible only in Riparian Protection and State Lands Restoration and Enhancement. Natural Areas projects emphasize resource preservation, protection, and study, while Urban Wildlife Habitat projects connect people with native habitat near urban communities.
