Description
The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) administers the Weatherization Assistance Program with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy. A statewide network of nonprofit providers delivers services to eligible residents. The program aims to reduce heating and cooling costs for low-income households while addressing energy-related health and safety risks. It does not pay utility bills.
An energy audit determines which measures are appropriate and cost-effective for each home. Work may include insulation and air sealing, ventilation fans, duct repairs, energy-efficient lighting, heating and cooling system repairs or replacement, and carbon monoxide and fire-safety measures. WAP is an energy conservation program, not a general home-repair or emergency no-heat program.
