Description
The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) makes competitive grants, using federal funding, to establish or expand community learning centers for school-age children and their families. Centers operate outside school hours, particularly serving children in high-poverty communities and low-performing schools. The program aims to improve academic achievement and student development while engaging families in their children’s education.
Funded activities may include tutoring, mentoring, evidence-based academic programs, STEM, cultural and technology education, healthy-lifestyle activities, and services for students with disabilities or English learners. Centers may also offer family literacy, parenting skills and other educational services. Programming can take place before or after school, on weekends, or during summer recess.
