The Wikimedia Foundation’s General Support Fund supports annual or strategic plans requiring sustained investment, alongside larger, distinct projects beyond the scope of Rapid Funds. Supported work includes education, cultural heritage and content accessibility, gender and diversity, community engagement, global campaigns, small-scale software development, and public policy advocacy protecting the free knowledge movement.
The Community Resources team supports the fund, with Regional Fund Committees assessing proposals in their local contexts. Funding can cover operating and program expenses, learning and training, organiser travel, and well-defined staff roles that do not replace volunteer activities. The program emphasises equity, empowerment, collaboration, self-management, and learning. Programming generally lasts at least six months, with regional exceptions possible.
