William V. Sliter Research Award supports graduate students studying Mesozoic and Cenozoic foraminifera, funding research into their taxonomy, ecology, evolution, and links to environmental change.
Funder: Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research
Due Dates: March 1, 2027 (Application deadline)
Funding Amounts: Up to $3,000 per award
Summary: Supports graduate student research on Mesozoic and Cenozoic foraminifera, including geochemistry directly related to living or fossil foraminifera.
Key Information: Applicants must be Cushman Foundation members at the time of application.
The William V. Sliter Research Award is administered by the Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research and was established in 1998 in memory of William V. Sliter. It supports graduate students with developed research projects on Mesozoic and Cenozoic foraminifera. Proposals are assessed on scientific merit and financial need.
Supported research spans taxonomy, biostratigraphy, ecology, evolution, and relationships between foraminifera and environmental change. Previous projects have investigated climatic transitions, ocean acidification, deep-sea extinction, shell architecture, and benthic biodiversity. Geochemical research is eligible when it relates to an aspect of living or fossil foraminifera, and applicants should explain that relationship. Studies using microfossils solely as geochemical indicators are not funded.
