Description
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) administers opioid settlement funding for Tribal nations and counties to cover room and board costs for Medicaid members in residential substance use disorder treatment. The funding supports members who have an opioid use disorder or are at risk for an opioid overdose.
The program addresses a gap in treatment financing: federal law prohibits Medicaid from reimbursing residential substance use disorder treatment providers for a client’s room and board expenses. DHS identifies lack of funding for these expenses as the primary reason Medicaid members do not enroll in this level of treatment. This initiative is part of the projects supported through Wisconsin’s state-managed opioid settlement funds.
