The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) administers this competitive grant to help livestock producers prevent wolf depredation. Funding comes from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species Conservation–Wolf Livestock Loss Compensation and Prevention program. Supported measures include purchasing guard animals, veterinary care for new or existing guard animals, fencing and other barriers, fladry, wolf-deterring lights and alarms, and calving or lambing shelters.
The program prioritizes livestock producers with recent, documented wolf depredation. Projects led by, impacting, or serving Native American Tribal Communities are encouraged. Grants reimburse approved prevention expenses rather than compensate producers for livestock already lost. Receiving a prevention grant does not affect continued eligibility for wolf depredation compensation payments.
